2nd Prix Jardin d'Europe - the winners
On Saturday, 12th of december 2009, the second Prix Jardin d'Europe - European Dance Prize for young Choreographers was given away in Brussels.
The winner of the first Prize – a Jardin d’Europe coproduction amounting to € 10.000,-- for the winner’s next creation - went to:
Claire Croizé (FR / BE) for "The Farewell"
The second Prize, an Artistic Residency at Workspace Brussels, was expanded: the jury has decided for two winners and therefore two Artistic Residencies were given to:
Florin Flueras (RO) for "A Brave Search of the Ultimative Reality"
Varinia Canto Vila (CL/BE) for "During Beginning Ending"
The awarding ceremony took a surprising turn, when the jury explained that actually there should be even three winners of the residency and Michael Stolhofer from sommerszene Salzburg got up from the audience and spontaneously offered a third Artistic Residency at his festival which was given to:
Lilia Mestre (PT /BE) for "The Live-in-Room"
The statement of the jury concerning their decision:
"From the outset, due to the specific nature of the Working Title Festival which presents finished works as well as works in progress we had two prizes to award. But even then, we were confronted with so many different and valid proposals that we were almost overwhelmed by the richness of it. However, at the end of the festival, we discovered that the really deciding factor for us was the triple issue of the singularity, the willingness to take risks and the drive of the artist. Six of them were outstanding in this respect (three in each category), be it in very different ways.
Amongst the works in progress we were struck by the quality of the work of Varinia Canto Vila , Florin Flueras and Lilia Mestre. Miss Canto Vila is outstanding in her effort to communicate in a very truthful way fleeting states of being. Florin Flueras radically doubts and yet affirms the transformative possibility of art using the artifices of the art itself. Lilia Mestre is exploring a radically different medium to make a choreography out of sound and space. Thanks to the generosity of Workspace Brussels and the spontaneous gesture of Szene Salzburg it was possible to award a residency to all three of them.
Three of the finished works stood out. Eleanor Bauer, who pretended to show a work in progress, actually gave the public in „(Big girls do big things)“ a fascinating view on the friction between the desire to embody a social role and the loss of authenticity that comes along with it. Sara Manente on the other hand, in „Lawaai means Hawaai“ demonstrates in a defiant way how loss of meaning is always imminent. Ultimately, the jury decided to award the prize to Claire Croizé because she succeeds in giving an equal importance to the elements of dance, lighting and music in confronting the major with the minor and likewise the minor with the major. The performance has the potential to reach a large public without watering down the choreographer’s artistic integrity."
