The summer is coming to an end and this year's dance festivals around the globe were subconsciously following a common research interest: "Contemporary Dance beyond 35° Celsius ? Pros and cons on an emerging subgenre". Do you have any contributions? A quite satisfying contribution to the world of contemporary dance was delivered by Ms. B. Spears who is recently rather losing here impact as pop celebrity but gains more and more recognition as an object of conceptual performances and performance studies. After "starring" in Alice Chauchat's and Vera Knolle's fabulous "A Number of Classics in the Age of Performance" shown at ImPulsTanz in Vienna, Britney moves on to the Big Apple to get married to a certain Mr. Dante.
Dance Theater Workshop presents
"Britney's Inferno" of Headlong Dance Theatre Sept. 17 - 20.
Two celebrities of a different kind are the object of
Lilia Mestre's latest piece. "Beyond Mary and Joseph" is part of the program of the
La Bâtie-Festival de Genèvein Switzerland Aug. 28 - Sept. 13 as well as works of Sarah Chase, Gilles Jobin and Wim Vandekeybus (who will hopefully continue forever his fertile collaboration with singer and songwriter David Eugene Edwards). Not forever, but for 50 years
Mr. Merce Cunningham has been around and this autumn provides Europeans with a few opportunities to see some work of his, eg. at the
Festival Romaeuropa Sept. 20 - Nov. 30., at the Tate Modern Gallery in London in November and at the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris in December.
The
Festival international de nouvelle danse in Montréal Sept. 30 - Oct. 12. offers some dance celebrities as well: Marie Chouinard, Lynda Gaudreau and William Forsythe will present their works, Meg Stuart will premiere a new Solo. The younger generation of choreographers will be represented by Martin Bélanger, Emmanuel Jouthe, Livia Daza-Paris, Joao Fiadeiro and others. And:
Boris Charmatz will bring his TV for "héâtre-élévision"! Those who have seen this unbelievable "pseudo-performance" for instance at ImPulsTanz in summer will still smile in disbelieve when thinking about it.
Loads of work of young choreographers can be seen at the
Balkan Dance Platform in Bukharest Sept. 25 - 28. Ivo Dimchev who just returned home from the danceWEB scholarship programme in Vienna is on the program as well as Galina Borrisova, Manuel Pelmus and many more. Even more art from South-East Europe features prominently in the multi-genre festival
Steirischer Herbst in Graz, Austria, Sept. 19. - Nov. 30. The Balkan Konsulat presents visual art from Sarajevo in an exhibition during the festival which also features some excellent dance events.
Xavier le Roy directs and choreographs a piece of music theatre composed by Bernhard Lang.
Sasha Waltz opens the festival with her choreographic installation "insideout" and
Milli Bitterli is choreographing the "Dry Clean Show" by Lisa D. The "Dry Clean Show" is a special kind of fashion show, presenting "CC Wear, an outfit branded in hell.." Britney, as I heard, refused to do the catwalk in Graz, but never mind, the organizers of the festival just did an open competition to find the best Power Point Presentation for this "lifestyle event". And even about this extraordinary dance event, our
EventDataBase has the details....
