RADIALSYSTEM - Berlin gains a freely financed dance and music site
Two halls, four studios, one loggia, one lounge and a good deal more: Berlin gains about 2.500 square meters freely financed area reserved for arts and culture. The new location is called Radialsystem V and owes its name to the one hundred years old pumping station. Built round 1904 at the waterside of the river Spree it was part of Berlin's sewage system. For years the partly war-torn building stood empty, until a private investor was found for the modification. Responsible for the culturale establishment is the newly founded Radialsystem V limited corporation with the support of the non-profit foundation Radial.
„Dialogue of the arts“ is the slogan of Radialsystem V, where music, dance, visual arts and new media will meet and new forms and ideas for innovative musical theater, scenic concerts, contemporary dance and exhibitions will be created and produced. An intensive cooperation between Sasha Waltz & Guests and the new location at the riverside is fixed. At the end of last year Waltz had abandoned Berlin's Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz. Henceforth Waltz considers the Radialsystem V as her base as she said in an interview, but accentuated at the same time, that she was only a guest. She accepts the responsibility for the dancers, but not for the whole establishment. On September 14, she presented with her company her new show at Radialsystem V. In „Dialogue 06 – Radial Systems“ the former pumping station became a place of exploration. The spectators have the opportunity to open up the building during the performance and to survey the place from the outside and from the riverside and to examine the halls and the studios. For the changing needs of social structures the Radialsystem V offers also family-friendly events and child care during selected performances. Above all the main focus of all activities lies on the idea of an academy, to educate the next generation of young artists in practice.
