"Les Assistantes"

“In an imagined draft there is no contradiction in wishing to live both alone and together at the same time”, according to Roland Barthes in his definition of imagination. In “Les Assistantes”, choreographer Jennifer Lacey and fine artist Nadia Lauro fathom out anew the utopia of the collective in which the individual does not have to limit his/her personal freedom. They create poetic and at the same time concretely physical takeovers of the individual into the community. As is to be expected from Lacey and Lauro, “Les Assistantes” is not simply a one-dimensional confrontation. Instead it cleverly plays with many layers of meaning and the consequences of a utopian idea.
