Critical Endeavour Talks
The participants of the Critical Endeavour programme, a project to further educate and support young dance journalists in Europe and beyond are also the jury for the "Ö1 Prix Jardin d'Europe". They will open some of their discussions to the public each wednesday. The talks will touch upon issues of how one can perceive and write about contemporary dance and will be moderated by Franz Anton Cramer, the mentor of the group.


Wednesday July 23, 6pm

German dance critic Franz Anton Cramer and his portuguese collegue Tiago Bartolomeu will present the project Critical Endeavour. The 11 participants of the project - young dance journalists from all over Europe and beyond - will question the role of criticsm and critics in relation to dance in this talk.

German dance critic Franz Anton Cramer and his collegue Gia Kourlas from New York will discuss the relationship between critics and dance artists
together with Iranian-Norwegian choreographer Hooman Sharifi as well as with the 11 participants of the project Critical Endeavour (young dance journalists from all over Europe and beyond).

In the last week of their programme the 11 participants of the Critical Endeavour project will discuss with the mentor of the group, German dance writer Franz Anton Cramer, what they call "realities": the practices of a jury, the questions of transparency and of communiation about art works in this context.

Hip Hop Theory
ImPulsTanz faculty – Storm and Bruce Ykanji – lead a public conversation from their personal viewpoints about the evolution of hip-hop as a dance form. In addition, we will discuss the future of the form and where invention resides both in practice and theory, and in training and performance.

Not Nostalgia


Late 20th century New York City was a wild and furious mix of social, political, economic, and artistic forces which were dynamically operating. We will discuss some of the local conditons and practices of this extended period with the aim of exposing how they continue to resonate in works and approaches now.
Current and former New York artists present will be: Penny Arcade, Jennifer Lacey, David Zambrano, Zeena Parkins, DD Dorvillier, Trajal Harrell, and others.
