Jérôme Bel (F)
"The show must go on"

Wonderful hits from 30 years of pop culture make this work a real delight. But it wouldn’t be a concoction by French conceptual choreographer Jérôme Bel if there wasn’t another level to “The Show Must Go On” too. Bel docks onto our system of memories. It is unavoidable that personal associations are made by the viewer with, for example “Tonight” (from “West Side Story”) or “Let the Sunshine In” (from “Hair”) which are confronted on stage with minimalist illustrations. Here friction is produced that has led to tumult in the auditorium. What one experiences is a piece with community, drama, love and death in a line up of songs. The redemptive promise that death is only simulated is part of the package delivered : “The Show Must Go On” by Queen.
