Residency at ImPulsTanz 2010

Project:

Mimosa

From different continents and different contexts (Cape Verde, New York, Buenos Aires, Paris), dancer-choreographers Cecilia Bengolea, Francois Chaignaud, Marlene Freitas, and Trajal Harrell meet in residency to begin creation of Mimosa, signed by the four hands. A meeting stimulated by an interest in the rare force of a voguing, a social performance begun in Harlem in the 1960's and continuing today. Thus, over a formal tribute to the amazing dances invented by the legends of voguing and an appropriation of the social criticism made visible by voguing's rejection, fascination and irony towards the dominant culture and entertainment industries, the choreographers want their bodies to deliver the experience of excess, processing, disguise, resistance and subjugation filtered through their personal meeting with this tradition of movement and social criticism. Mimosa is the medium (M) size in a series of projects conceptualized by Trajal Harrell entitled Twenty Looks or Paris is Burning at the Judson Church (created in five different sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL).
