Talks...

... and Talk Back

In diesem Sinne: TALK BACK !

Public Talks ImPulsTanz 09

THE SOMATIC SALON

an open, informal forum for community based dialogues on the politics of dancing
initiated, hosted and fuelled by Sri Louise (USA/AT)

Dates:
Sunday, July 26, 17:45, Arsenal
Sunday, August 2, 16:00, Arsenal
Sunday, August 9, 17:30, Arsenal

Topics:
• How do Somatic Practices Influence/Generate Dance Pedagogy and Contemporary Performance?
• The Body on Stage: Subject or Object?
• The Politics of Motion: Who Makes the Work -VS- Who Owns it?
• Dancer Rights: Oxymoron or Long Overdue?
• Colonial Conventions in Contemporary Choreographers
• Alternative Models of Production: Dance Co-Operatives, Can They Decentralize the Dance Machine?

Guest Facilitators:
This is a community based project where all teachers (& guests) of the festival are welcomed, through an open invitation, to participate and in a sense, co-create these community dialogues. The guest facilitators are encouraged to suggest topics, experiment with formats and to promote these conversations among their peers and students.

Vision:
Topics of interest are generated by, and intended for, the dance community as a whole regardless of individual technical style or artistic genre. Topics reflect the current needs, changing dynamics and frequent frustrations of the professional and pedagogical dance environment as seen from the perspective of those most immediately effected: students, teachers, free lance/company performers and choreographic artists. These discussions are envisioned to serve as a kind of grass-roots, contemporary dance think tank or an experimental, political powwow, in which all are welcome to participate!

Structure:
Lounge style conversations, offering the comfort/confusion of informal intimacy...the “living-room” setting is meant to encourage relaxed, but passionate dialogues among cross generational peers. The underlying spirit of these discussions is towards cultivating creative tolerance with respect to communal differences in pedagogical ideologies and performative preferences.

Documentation:
In keeping with the value of communal accessibility/inclusivity, these discussions will be documented via video and made publicly available through the ImPulsTanz website.
