Matjaz Faric (SI)
The beginnings of Matjaž’s dancing career go back in the nineteen eighties. He got his education from ballet school in Maribor and the Dresden Palluca Schule and went on to create several dance groups in his rich career. He created a string of six early works with his first group, East Dance Project: Sixth of April and Breakdown (1988), Red Alarm (1989), Emotional (1990), Icht (1991). In 1988 he danced in the Ballet Observatory ZENIT within the scope of the Red Pilot group, next year he worked as a choreographer in Drama Observatory ZENIT. He staged Wind, Sand and Stars in Slovensko mladinsko gledališče and was awarded the Borštnik prize for original project in 1991. In 1993 he presented ‘potoples’ DETT and Solo, followed by reinterpretations of ballet classics: Swan Lake (1994), Romeo and Juliet (1995), Le Sacre du Printemps (1996), Trilogy, Last Chapter (1997). In the season of 1997/98 he created performance Clone and its shorter version RAM in Dance Theatre Ljubljana; next year Island was staged. In the fall of 1999 Flota group was established and, as a resident choreographer of Cankarjev dom, Farič staged Terminal (proclaimed Slovenian performance of 1999 by Mladina weekly), performances 10 Degrees Below 0 in 2000 and Temptation in 2001. 2002 was the year of a solo project 3.oLo and the performance Talk Me Your Body, A Circle in the Body – A Square in the Head in 2003 and Bari in 2004. His collaborations abroad include dancing in performances by Amsterdam based group Testworks in the season of 1988/89, choreography work for Studio for modern dance in Zagreb (performances Stravinsky and Me, 1995, and The Rite of Spring, 2004) and for Diversions Dance Company from Cardiff (From Desert Through the Forest, 1997). In 2004 he staged BETA for French Compagnie Coline. As a choreographer he took part in the making of opera and theatre performances in Ljubljana, Nova Gorica, Celje, Maribor, Klagenfurt, Zagreb, Rijeka and Antwerpen – most frequently directed by Vito Taufer (Odysseus and Son, Kraljevo, Timon of Athens, Tartuffe, Snow White And the Seven Dwarfs), Eduard Miler (Magic and Loss, Susn, Miss Julie) and Matjaž Zupančič (The Threepenny Opera, The Corridor). 2006 marks 20 years of his work and premieres of three new performances: the first, Numbbodynumbpoems, was staged in January, the other two, Whywouldanybodystopme and Alone, will follow in June, co produced by French dance group Coline.
