José Luis Sultán was born in Buenos Aires in 1957 and has gained recognition as a dancer and as the creator of particulare and expressive choreographies in Europe, dancing the role of the Minotaur in Les Taureaux de Chimène by Karine Saporta (co production of the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris and Mercat de Les Flors in Barcelona) and Jago in Othello , produced by the Theaterhaus Stuttgart under the direction of Johann Kresnik with Ismael Ivo. He has written successful choreographies such as the solo Kaddish in Memoriam, created in 1996 and presented in various countries around Europe. In that same year he created Schwanengesang for the National Theatre Mannheim Dance Company and Der Heimliche Garten with Zula Lemes. He started working with the choreographer Jean Christophe Blavier in 1998, for whom he danced the Out of Silence trio with Marcia Haydée and Giora Feidman and Touching the Leading Edge with Marcia Haydée and the soloists from the Stuttgarter Ballet. In 2002, he created and danced King Laurino in a co production of Dolomytica by the Teatro Comunale in Bolzano and the Tanzsommer Innsbruck festival, with choreography by Chiara Tanesini and Jean Christophe Blavier. In 2003 he danced Yoshi Oida’s Receipts of Love with Zula Lemes and João de Bruço at the Hebbel Theatre in Berlin. In 2003 he was in Jean Christophe Blavier’s production of Meeting Source with Chiara Tanesini and soloists from the ballet of Toulouse. He was also the leading actor in the film Memosium (2002) by french director Louis Dupont. Since 1991 he works with the painter Colette Grandgerard on a project to resaerch human behaviour.
