Artist
Editta Braun (AT)
Editta Braun has the devil in her and has that certain amount of impertinence which arouses sympathy. Her dance is based upon longing, upon liveliness and energy as well as drollery and wit. She is quick-witted without breaking into laughter. She incorporates the esprit of youth, spontaneity and joy in communication without taking herself too seriously"

is the Grande Dame of contemporary dance theatre 'Made in Salzburg'. For the past ten years we have been awed and touched by the stunning work of forty-two year old dancer and choreographer Editta Braun. Her curiously peeking behind the façades, her ability to luring the audience into a poetical parallel universe, with a boisterous and effervescent fantasy plus a wry and witty shot of social criticism here and there... " (Heidrun Hofstetter in tanz affiche)

Editta Braun, the Untamed Shrew.
More then ever, fter 15 years on stage, she is walking her own particular line. With a good dose of sympathetic stubborness and serenely unconcerned with actual fads and trendy hypes, the poetic substance of her work is quite a plausible argument against the meanwhile obviously commonly accepted disenchantment of the world. What declares itself to be a new kind of realism is indeed but one out of many possible esthetic constructions: the admittence of ones own sobering under the condition of technoid euophoria.

She is opposing the meshes of network of systemically legitimised constraints, that is gradually creeping into our everyday lives, by exposing herself to conditions of production on the 'outside' - the socalled third world.
Artistic productions and collaborations in India, Uzbekistan, Egypt or in Senegal: this is not just the experience of a reality 'outside' - it is also the bringing-back of these experiences into the increasingly hermetic space of our societies.
A space within which this other reality seems to exist but by way of the artificiality of estheticised metphors.

From 1996 onwards the creation of her pieces has been inseparably connected with the music of composer Thierry Zaboitzeff.
The company consists of a core group, and dancers or artists coming from other fields, who are contracted on a project basis. Editta Braun’s pieces are characterized by an expressive style, strongly influenced by theatre and performance, with humor and pathos often walking side by side, and are interwoven with elements showing a commitment to social criticism.
Serious craftmanship, intelligent precision and an osmotic exchange between composition and choreography are the creative breath of the dramaturgical, choreographic and dance process. The pieces are created by means of a combination of intense theme-oriented research (literature) as well as rehearsals with a psychological and autobiographical focus.
