Francesca Grilli (b. in 1978, Bologna, Italy) lives and works in Amsterdam. Between 2006 and 2008 she was a resident artist at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam and in 2009 was invited from Stedelijk Museum Bereau, SMBAto be part of Red AiR residency. Since 2008, she is a part of the project Fies Factory supported by Centrale Fies. In her research two potentially spinal aspects vibrate: the treatment of sound in all its forms and registers, and the viewer’s space of action. The former is a linguistic element with infinite possibilities of expressive modulation and the latter is an immense territory. In the videos the attention is placed on the complexity of the innermost story and on the multi-leveled temporal conjugation, whilst in the performance she researches the intensity of the action. Grilli enjoys showing the countless, yet, mostly invisible perceptual crevices which can either welcome or reject once and for all the viewer, in that ever unhinging territory, because ever so personal, which is her work.
